Creation Unit – My Father’s World Kindergarten
We’ve officially wrapped up our first week of kindergarten and the creation unit at the beginning of our curriculum! This year, we’re using My Father’s World Creation from A to Z for my son’s kindergarten and the plan is to share a little about each unit as we go through it.

Hopefully, this post and all those that follow will be helpful for families using MFW, but also for other homeschool families doing similar unit studies in the kindergarten and early elementary years.
For some helpful context, my son is currently 4.5 years old.

Combining Weeks 1 & 2
First things first, I think it’s helpful to note here that the creation unit at the beginning of MFW’s kindergarten is set up as a two-week unit. However, we ended up covering everything in just one week. Instead of learning about one creation day each morning, we learned about two.
This wasn’t something I had planned out ahead of time. But on the first day, we had wrapped up day one of creation in just 15 minutes and my son was eager to find out what happened next. In that moment, I decided to go ahead and fit both weeks of the curriculum into one.
In total, each day only took us about 30-45 minutes, even covering two days worth of curriculum. It was very light. Part of what made everything move so quickly, though, is that the first two weeks are set up to review the alphabet and letter names, and my son just flew through those portions. He’s very familiar with letters, so there was really very little need to review them at all.
What Went Well
When I initially told my son that we’d be studying creation, he was less than enthused. We’ve covered creation before, so I think he kind of felt like “been there, done that.” However, by the end of the first day, he was all in. He loved it and couldn’t wait to find out what happened on the next day as we went through each day of creation.
He really enjoyed coloring the numbers that came with the curriculum and creating a “Creation Book” with a page for each day of creation. I was honestly surprised by how much he embraced the Creation Book process. He had his own ideas for exactly what each page should look like and which materials he wanted to use. It was fun to see him get creative and be confident in his designs.
What We Disliked or Skipped
Like I mentioned above, the letter review was very easy for him, so I either went over things very quickly or skipped it all together. At one point, I began to explain that we would “sing the ABC song and point to each letter as we…” And before I could even finish, he quickly sang through the song pointing to each letter.
I think the actual reading portion of the letter learning starts on week 6 and I’m excited for us to get there. I’m hoping that the letter review doesn’t get too boring for him before we actually start learning to read.
Our Favorite Creation Books
This is a section that I’d like to include with each unit review, but we don’t own any creation books and I had a real struggle finding any at our library. There were two or three, which I put on hold, but there are long waits to get them. So maybe I’ll update this once we receive and read through the books I put on hold.
One Last Note
This week was a very fun and gentle week. The creation unit grabbed my son’s attention, and I could see him processing exactly when everything was created in the timeline. We’ve studied creation before, but I have a feeling this time will stick in his memory really well. Now I’m excited to dive into our next unit – sun!
